For forty years, Prairie Historical Society has documented the histories of Climax, Scotts and the surrounding areas. The History Room at Lawrence Memorial District Library has detailed files and exhibits dating back will into the 1800s. Among the treasures are photos, videos, slides, negatives, microfilms and documents of varying formats from PHS Newsletters to handwritten ledgers and meeting minutes from local businesses, clubs and organizations. Historically (pun fully intended), the only way to see such treasures was to visit the History Room during business hours or by appointment.
That is about to change. PHS and Climax-Scotts Digital Network are working together in creating the new website, prairiehistoricalsociety.org with an expected launch in March this year. Over the last year, a great deal of digital conversion, restoration and preservation work has been done on PHS video archives. In the last few weeks, new tools have been acquired, enabling restorations and enhancements of historical pictures sourced from slides, photo negatives and more.
It is important to note that at no time will the website ever be a 100% complete representation of all the artifacts in the History Room. Some items simply will have to be seen in person, others are records that simply cannot be made available on the internet.
The goal is to start the website with a selection of videos, photos, documents and past newsletters. And additional items will be added with time, seeing new content added to the website often. The website aspires to functionally serve "like a Netflix of area history."
The website will require an active PHS Membership, priced at $15 per year. PHS Members with accounts in good standing can email admin@climaxscottsdigitalnetwork.com to receive their access to the website. Upon launch, new members will be able to sign up through the website.
